West must lift sanctions after accepting enrichment
Tehran, May 21, (ICANA) – Deputy Head of the Majlis (parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Hossein Ebrahimi says Tehran’s negotiators should try to get the West to remove anti-Iran sanctions in the upcoming talks with major world powers in Baghdad.
“Our country has gone beyond [uranium] enrichment and we believe that sanctions which have been imposed on us due to enrichment should be lifted,” Ebrahimi said on Monday.
The lawmaker added that the upcoming talks between Iran and the P5+1 - the US, Britain, China, Russia, and France plus Germany - are very important and strategic.
Ebrahimi stated that many countries have acknowledged Iran's inalienable right to enrichment and even US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recognized the right after the Istanbul negotiations.
“Now that the Americans and the Western countries have accepted the principle of enrichment in Iran, there is no reason for sanctions to remain in place. Therefore, our negotiators must try to have the sanctions lifted,” he added.
The lawmaker said European countries have already indicated their willingness to lift these sanctions.
“The US has not opposed this and Russia and China have also declared readiness [to do this] considering that Russia was against Iran sanctions from the beginning. Therefore, conditions are ripe and we must move forward so things can get done,” he said.
Ebrahimi stated that Iran must interact with different countries because “having relations is better than not having them.”
“Basically, contact [with other countries] is a requisite of the Iranian civilization, but what has blocked our relations with the US and certain other countries is their arrogance and we must try to strip them of their arrogance,” he added.
